In this often hectic world in which we live, facing heavy issues like the harsh economy and upcoming presidential election, it is no wonder many may well be stressed on a daily basis. While meditation and yoga will reduce stress levels and help maintain a healthy cortisone hormone range, another stress relieving option is available, inherent within each and every one of us: laughter.
Yoga to the Rescue from Rescue Girl is a small, loosely bound book packed with 48 classic yoga poses presented in a fun way with humorous illustrations. All poses are designed to aid in relaxation and relieve stress or other issues facing real women in the real world. "No issue is ignored," states Amy Luwis, author and creator, "hung-over, insomnia, bloating, and even a jiggly butt."
The book is divided into seven categories every woman can relate to: Sexy, Calm, Energy, Restore, Cleanse, Sanity, and Ragtime. In Yoga to the Rescue, Rescue Girl uses smart wit to showcase poses in an effort to elicit smiles and levity from her reader.
With a background in humorous illustrations, Amy Luwis set out to create an accessible and fun yoga book that would appeal to the mainstream girl. While traditional yoga may seem more reverent, Rescue Girl uses charm to show how one can overcome anything with her easy to follow, streamlined yoga instruction. "Life can be a bit like Dante’s Inferno, so I tend to interpret things with a lot of humor; this helps me avoid checking into a mental institution," Luwis says.
Luwis is a co-founder of the non-profit organization Adopt-a-Pet.com (formerly 1-800-SAVE-A-PET.com), North America’s largest pet adoption web service. Her ultimate goal, beyond yoga, is to help all living beings, including the four-legged varieties.
Finding that people either love or hate Rescue Girl’s interesting take on yoga, Luwis presents her witty charm for those who are not interested in the seriousness of the practice, but rather enjoy taking a lighthearted approach to not only yoga, but life as well. Luwis, through ironic illustrations that are neither practical nor a true interpretation of the pose, offers a decidedly different approach to yoga in order to help her sisters through a hard day or harsh situation. For example there is an image of a girl in a forward fold with a glass of wine on her bum. After all, the old adage goes, "laughter is the best medicine." In this case, that is certainly true.
Printed on recyclable paper and packed nicely in a reusable gift tote, this small book is perfect for those new to yoga and who may be a bit timid to enter into a practice which may have previously been foreign to them. Even for a serious practitioner, Yoga to the Rescue is sure to give rise to a smile when one is most in need.
