We are surrounded by poignant lessons every day—if only we would stop long enough to look and listen.
In my case, today I had to stop to, well, use the facilities. I'll admit it's been a very long time since I have seen inside of a fast food restaurant. I would like to officially apologize to the board of directors and shareholders of these monolithic burger giants for making use of your facilities without purchasing something.
On the way in and the way out of the burger joint, I noticed something very glaring. For the most part, the children and teens who were entering, eating, and leaving looked to be fit and in shape. Not that childhood obesity is not an issue today, but during my visit they all looked about the right size.
Different story for the adults in the crowd. I would say of the adults I saw, likely 70% or more were packing more than just today's lunch. The majority of them were seriously overweight. A few would have been classified as morbidly obese.
What I saw provided a visual example that relates to a quote by Jim Rohn on success and failure. He said:
"Success is a few disciplines repeated daily. Failure is a few errors in judgment repeated daily."
Children or teens enjoying one burger or one large fries or one extra-large soda are not going to have their lives or their health altered. Having one on rare occasions now and again is not going to impact their health or waistline.
Repeated indulgences in fast food, however, and falling down the rabbit hole of negative behaviors will one day set them on track to fit in with the adults I saw there today.
Here's the lesson, I guess: We don't succeed and we don't fail today.
Passing by and not stopping to refuel at fast food places again and again is what will lead towards optimal health and a trim waistline. Investing in the small disciplines daily over a lifetime is what provides all the right pieces to put together for the puzzle of life.
Have an excellent day.
