Q. What are the benefits of using protein powder? Who should use these products? Do they contain unnecessary or unhealthy ingredients?
A: There are many different types of protein shakes. Most are made from whey, soy, hemp, or rice protein. Whey and hemp shakes are the two varieties recommended.
Whey protein is considered a medical food - it repairs tissues and boosts immunity (liver detoxification) significantly, and also reduces cortisol (a stress hormone). Look for a formula that does not contain aspartame or sucralose (Splenda). It should be either unsweetened, or sweetened with stevia. Whey protein also improves the quality your nails, hair and skin.
Hemp protein is rich in omega 3 and 6 fats to boost immunity and raise energy. Vega shake is an excellent popular brand.
Soy is controversial because it may raise estrogen and is often difficult to digest. There is plenty of soy in our diet via by-products in processed foods.
Rice protein provides extra calories without much benefit.
If you choose to supplement with protein shakes regularly, the best approach is to alternate between whey and hemp to receive the benefits of both. Please remember the shake will contribute to your overall caloric intake. You can enjoy it anytime of the day or evening without fear of weight gain, as long as your total calories don't exceed your energy consumption.
