I am a Vegan, what supplements should I take? Vegan Vegetarian Diet Healthy Living Nutrients

Q: I am a 16 year old vegan. Should I be taking any vitamins other than B12 which I already take? –Carolyn

A: While vitamin B12 is the most important supplement for vegans, keep an eye on your iron levels as well. There are many plant-based sources of iron – beans, beets, dried fruit, and steamed greens (like spinach). A vegan multi-vitamin will provide any additional nutrients that may not be available from your diet. Signs that adequate nutrients are being provided are high energy and a strong immune system. If you find that you’re often fatigued and have frequent colds or illness, have your health care practitioner (doctor, nutritionist or naturopathic doctor) test your nutrient levels.
