Burnout Syndrome Can Happen to Anyone

Written by Odessa Gill

Burnout can happen at any age.Take a day off. Haven’t heard this in awhile? If not, just do it. Remember, if you do not plan it for yourself, who will?

There is a phenomenon that I see in practice every day: Complete burnout. It’s happening not just in individuals who are in their forties and fifties, but now also in teenagers and those in their twenties and thirties. Why are so many people burning out? Increased pressure to perform at work and at home for extended periods of time.

How many of us go to work and then also bring work home to completein the evening? How many of us work weekends? Our bodies and minds therefore never get a chance to play, breathe, exercise, and have fun.

If your life feels like this lately, make the changes necessary to live a healthier, fulfilled life. You owe it to yourself.

Adrenal Exhaustion

Adrenal exhaustion is the term that describes the physical effects from leading a stressful life.

The adrenal glands are not commonly discussed but are extremely important for numerous reactions that occur in the body. We have two adrenal glands, which are comprised of two parts: the medulla and the cortex.

One of the reactions that the medulla is responsible for the “flight or fight” response. This has an impact on blood flow in the body, rate of breathing and heart activity. The cortex creates hormones that regulate reproductive functions and other responses.

Burnout syndrome—also known as adrenal exhaustion—is the process where the glands continuously produce the stress hormone cortisol.

Symptoms of Adrenal Exhaustion

Common symptoms associated with adrenal exhaustion are:

  • Insomnia

  • Fatigue (even after adequate hours of sleep)

  • Cravings for coffee or sweets or other stimulants

  • Poor concentration

  • Nervousness

  • Impaired memory

  • Irritability

  • Depression

It is possible to have one or many of these symptoms and not have adrenal exhaustion. A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) or other healthcare provider must also be provided with personal and medical history before determining if this condition applies. Since adrenal fatigue can create many deleterious effects on the body, seeking the advice of a healthcare provider would be beneficial.

Natural Remedies to Help Burnout Syndrome

Vitamin therapy and supplements can help support the body where nutrient deficiencies might exist.

Daily stressors can lead to increased need for specific nutrients. A high-quality multivitamin with vitamins and minerals is often recommended.

There are also numerous herbs that can improve energy and support the immune system. Ginsengs, such as Panax Ginseng, North American Ginseng, and Siberian Ginseng (also known as Eleuthro), and Ashwagandha are adaptogens, commonly used herbs for helping the body adapt to stress.

Any vitamin or herb therapy should be discussed with your healthcare provider to determine if supplementation is required and, if so, the proper dosage. In addition, an evaluation of any possible drug-herb interactions is required.

Diet

Diet is also important to consider. The following diet can change the way you feel:

  • Rich in antioxidants

  • Low in saturated fat

  • Low in sugar

  • Low in processed foods

Talk to your ND or other healthcare provider for an individualized diet evaluation and plan.

Exercise

Regular exercise may be more important than any other prescription. Get together with friends and create “gym days”—and stick to them.

If a gym is not available, home workout videos or even a simple walk every day can have lasting health benefits.

Turn Burnout Around Fast

The good news? Change can happen today.

Sit down with yourself and your family and plan to have more fun. Take the time today to listen to your needs and create a healthier life.
