This was the question that Jörn and I asked ourselves after living for seven years in the green oasis we called home in Brooklyn, NY.

Renovated using every re-cycled material within the house that was salvageable, we worked with only non-toxic materials throughout. Active and passive solar techniques along with feng shui were integrated into the architectural design. The landscaping of the backyard with a pond (irrigated by rainwater collection) and a vegetable garden fertilized with breeded worms for homemade compost, created an outdoor open “room” for enjoying breakfasts and balmy summer nights.

These and other additions to the ecological, healthy balance of the re-construction of the house lead to an indoor environment that was as healthy as we could make it. The sustainable way of life was manifested in the attitude and lifestyles of the inhabitants. The tenants living in this house each enhance the environment by regarding it with a sense of responsibility and appreciation because it’s their home too.

Jörn and I did everything that we knew to do with our consciousness routine to reduce our carbon footprint, which of course included carrying our own re-usable shopping bags to the market. The car was even sold so our main means of transportation outside of NYC was

Dreams Matter http://www.naturallysavvy.com/dreams-and-soul/dreams-matter Dreams really can make a difference. Photo: TheAlieness GiselaGiardino23 via FlickrI’m preparing a proposal for a book that I’m writing on children’s dreams hoping to find a publisher. It’s an exercise that forces one to focus on what is important in a concise and succinct way. When I peel back the layers of my book, what it comes down to is this: Dreams Matter. I feel so strongly about this that I’ve trademarked the phrase! And if they matter to us, then why aren’t we teaching this to our children? Do you need some convincing? Here are some examples of people to whom dreams mattered.

  • John von Neumann, mathematician, laid the foundation of modern computer studies and wrote theorems in his dreams.

  • Rene Descartes had three dreams in one night that he described as revealing to him the basis of a new philosophy (Cartesianism).

  • Eight years after he had written and abandoned the first half of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull,” Richard Bach had a dream in which he finished the story. It picked up exactly where he had left off.

  • Directors Akira Kurosawa, Francis Ford Coppola and John Sayles credit their work to their dreams. Robert Altman’s “Three Women” and Ingmar Bergman’s “Sawdust and Tinsel” and “Cries and Whispers” were all based on dreams.

  • In science, organic chemist Friedrich August Kekule, dreamed the process of the formation of the carbon chain, and the circular structure of the benzene ring. Dmitry Mendeleyev created the periodic tables from a dream.

  • Father of

Smart Supplements for High School Athletes http://www.naturallysavvy.com/fitness-and-movement/smart-supplements-for-high-school-athletes supplements for athletes high school athletes back to school nutrition healthy eating protein powderWhile parents prepare for their annual fall tradition of purchasing school supplies and textbooks, taking trips to the mall for new school clothes and saying goodbye to the final days of summer, they must also turn their attention to the activities in which their children will participate this year. As parents, coaches and mentors, we have a responsibility to help young adults make the right nutritional and wellness choices that will optimally support both academic and athletic endeavors.

    Smart Supplements
Even in households committed to good nutrition and healthy habits, it is challenging to provide a high school athlete with all that he or she needs to be successful on and off the field. Incorporating a healthy diet, getting proper sleep and, of course, hard work and perseverance are key factors that go into having a healthy life…but also are keys to making successful athletes. In addition, athletes can also look to improve their overall health (and consequently, their athletic performance) by incorporating dietary supplements into their wellness routine. Products like omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, and multivitamins can help ensure athletes get all of the nutrients they need.  Other supplement products, like protein powders, can be beneficial for some athletes, as well. A multivitamin offers nutritional insurance to ensure that daily requirements for vitamins and minerals are met. Numerous national surveys have shown that young people fall short in important

The Importance of a Healthy Breakfast http://www.naturallysavvy.com/healthy-eating/the-importance-of-a-healthy-breakfast eating a healthy breakfast most important meal of the day healthy breakfast recipes healthy breakfast ideas weight loss src=Breakfast! It’s not just the most important meal of the day it’s actually my favorite meal of the day. Breakfast is the fuel that keeps our minds and bodies running throughout the day. We’ve heard how important breakfast is since we were kids. And, if you have kids, I’m sure you do everything in your power to get them to eat breakfast every day. Well, how often do you heed that advice?

With our hectic schedules, it’s easy to stop by the nearest Starbucks, grab a cup of coffee and a bagel, a muffin that’s loaded with fat and calories, or skip breakfast altogether. Well, I can tell you that a cup of coffee and a muffin (or bagel) does not count as a nutritious breakfast. A Caramel Macchiato has a whopping 270 calories, 10 grams of fat, and 34 grams of carbs and we haven’t even added the calories from the bagel or muffin. A reduced fat blueberry muffin had 450 calories, 10 grams of fat, and 86 grams of carbs. So, if this was what you had for breakfast this morning, you’ve just ingested 720 calories, 20 grams of fat, and 120 grams of carbs!

Many people skip breakfast in an effort to lose weight. Actually, you

As summer begins to come to a close, we get to experience all the beautiful changing colors, the smell of fall in the air, and cooler temperatures.  Despite all the wonderful things the autumn has to offer, it’s also time to start preparing for cold and flu season.  For many, this can bring along with it a sense of anxiety and concern, especially given all of the media attention given to recent flu stains.  Rest assured, there are several things you can do this year to build your immunity naturally and to help you and your family make it through the season happy and healthy.

The key to staying healthy and to avoiding these nasty bugs is to strengthen your defenses, primarily your immune system, so that your body can fight any virus as it enters the body.  Here are some powerful ways to boost your immune system and prepare you and your family for this flu season.

    Add Some Sunshine

Researchers are quickly catching on that Vitamin D may be the secret to avoiding the cold and flu. Vitamin D plays an important role in strengthening your defense system to better fight any invading viruses and bacteria. Unfortunately, it is also the number one vitamin deficiency in Americans. The truth is, I have been eating raw so long I don’t often think about it as it just so part of my everyday life. Whether I am going out for an hour or more I always take my own purified energized water and foods. I have a quality stainless steel BPA free thermos for my liquids such as purified water and herbal teas.

I stock up whatever looks fresh in fruits and vegetables. It is really that easy! When traveling you can even do a quick search on most smart/cell phones either before hand or when you arrive to find local health stores for great produce and restocking your supplements depending on how long your trip will be.

Back To School With Eco-Chic Style http://www.naturallysavvy.com/beauty-and-fashion/back-to-school-with-eco-chic-style back to school shopping eco friendly shopping vegan clothing eco friendly clothing back to school fashionI’ve always been a bit obsessed with fashion. My subscription to Elle Magazine started when I was in the 4th grade, while most other girls were ogling Tiger Beat (don’t get me wrong, I ogled Tiger Beat too). I think it all began when my mother sent me to my first day of Kindergarten in a white ballet neck tee that read my name, D-E-A-N-A, on the front and a knee-length denim wrap skirt. I believe it was then that I took hold of my own fashion destiny and back-to-school shopping became my favorite time of the year. And now, back-to-school shopping is again very exciting to me because finally there are some stylish “eco” options for students.

    Organic Cotton Jacket

To avoid incidents like the D-E-A-N-A debacle, I’ve always thought it made sense to dress kids like little adults –not too serious, but also not overly playful. A perfect example, the organic cotton Variola Jacket by Sustainable Kids, is polished and cozy at the same time. A great piece to make recess time just a bit more stylish!

Simple Solutions for a Sound Sleep http://www.naturallysavvy.com/east-meets-west/simple-solutions-for-a-sound-sleep Simple adjustments to your routine can help you sleep better. Photo: Dreamstime. Are you getting enough sleep? If your answer is no, then you're not alone. Approximately 29 percent of Americans report getting less than seven hours of sleep per night on a regular basis.

Sure many of us can handle the loss of an hour or two or even three every now and then, but it becomes a problem when we become unable to pay back our sleep debt. Just one week of insufficient sleep can affect our health and feeling of well being. Too little sleep can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, depression and obesity, and it also makes you more susceptible to bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens because the immune system is weakened. Sleep is a key pillar to good health, on par with healthy eating and regular exercise.

But there is a simple solution: Go to bed earlier! If this isn't something you normally do, you'll need to plan ahead. First, consider that you may not be able to complete everything that you might like to complete in a day. If you've put too much on your plate, allow yourself to take some of it off until the next day. What must absolutely be done and what can wait? Be forgiving of yourself.

Getting Kids to Read http://www.naturallysavvy.com/mom-talk/getting-kids-to-read Boy reading a book Photo by John-Morgan via Flickr. Many parents ask me how to get their kids to read more. In today's world of computer games and television, it can feel like a daunting task.  Here are some tips to help encourage kids to read.

    1. Model, model, model. Be seen reading books so your kids follow in your footsteps.

    2. Sign up for a library card and take your child to the library once a week.

    3. Keep a list on the refrigerator on what books each member of the family has read that month.

    4. Read out loud to your children often. Age doesn't matter. Everyone likes to be read to.

    5. Get books on tape so you can all listen to them in the car. Or make your own.

    6. Trade time on the computer for time reading.

    7. Talk about what you're reading. Make it fun to discuss literature. Don't be afraid to express what you like or don't like about a book.

    8. Don't worry if your child doesn't finish a book. He may not like it, and that's OK.

    9. While books can be expensive, do take your child to the bookstore once in a while and have her pick out her own purchase.

    10. Take turns reading stories to each other while on car rides.

    11. Have a family reading night where no one watches TV or gets on the computer.

Wi-Fi in Schools: Do We Need Precautions? http://www.naturallysavvy.com/environmental-issues/wi-fi-in-schools-do-we-need-precautions Wired computer labs work fine for kids. Photo by mikecogh via Flickr.Wi-Fi is facing a lot of opposition from parents and teachers in Ontario. Last week, Lloyd Alter was critical of parents' claims that Wi-Fi may pose a health threat to students at elementary schools, and he made some valid arguments.

But there are preliminary studies that indicate micro wave technologies may adversely effect human health, and even the World Health Organization (WHO) admits more research is needed before we can say with certainty whether or not the many electronic devices that generate electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are safe.

This really shouldn't be a debate. Until such time as we know that these technologies are absolutely safe, Wi-Fi has no place in elementary schools, and maybe not even in high schools.

Marketers spend endless hours developing a brand and promoting it. Healthy skin is your brand promotion for good health. It is your wellness image-maker.

    First Impressions

Estimates are it only takes three seconds to create a first impression. In building a business relationship, that time is critical to success. From your outward appearance to your handshake, your skin is your image of health – inside and out. Good skin care propels your image of vitality and health. It partners with good nutrition, fitness, and brain health to become the wrapping on overall health.

    Take Care of the Wrapping

Most people do not think about their skin as an organ, but it is the largest organ in the body. It is the body’s protection against the environment and the wrapping on the amazing sense of touch. To keep this vital organ functioning at its best, here are a few tips for taking care of your skin.

Be sun-smart: Sunlight is important for the production of Vitamin D, which occurs when sunlight touches your skin. Vitamin D helps prevent osteoporosis and other diseases, as shown in recent studies. One, reported in Harvard Health Publications, revealed researchers found evidence that Vitamin D could help reduce the risk of breast cancer. Another study described in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed individuals with low levels of Vitamin D have an increased

Investment Planning for a Balanced Portfolio http://www.naturallysavvy.com/inspiration-and-motivation/investment-planning-for-a-balanced-portfolio mutual funds investment financial planning investing money balanced portfolio mutual fund performanceSince the words “sub-prime mortgage crisis” were first uttered over 2 years ago, investment markets have been in constant state of flux. 2010 has been just as much of a roller coaster ride, though it’s rarely been mentioned by the media. From February until May investment markets advanced by approximately 10% (as evidenced by the performance of the NYSE composite index) but those gains were all but lost between May and July.

How can you use these turbulent times to your advantage? The following theories are simple but they take guts to implement.

    Rebalancing

Experts agree that diversification is the only investment strategy that works in the long run. Diversification requires that you invest in different products such as: cash, fixed-income investments (bonds) and equities (stocks) because these investments appreciate and depreciate at different times. Some or all of these investments can be held in mutual funds (baskets of investments that are sold as a single product), which will achieve further diversification.  Diversification will essentially protect your portfolio from a complete freefall.

The next step is to determine a mix of investments (i.e. an asset allocation), based on your individual needs, that is appropriate for your risk tolerance and the amount of time you wish to have your money invested. Once this mix is established, stick to it! Designing your asset allocation takes introspection and the advice of a financial planner or investment advisor and will

Decoding Cosmetics Labels http://www.naturallysavvy.com/beauty-and-personal-care/decoding-cosmetics-labels cosmetics labels cosmetic labels natural beauty products reading labels decoding cosmetics labelsIf you enjoy grocery shopping like I do, you probably spend time browsing the aisles looking for great new products. I’m always interested in something that will help me pick up more dirt, that will make my meals taste better, and that will get my whites whiter than white. Discovering these products isn’t difficult; you just have to look for the special “NEW” or “IMPROVED” flashes on the labels. In fact, as any consumer goods marketer will tell you, a product’s label is one of the most powerful selling tools they have. It’s also one of the most efficient – it doesn’t cost extra to have a label on your product. In fact, you have to, so you may as well make it work for you.

When it comes to skin care and cosmetics, manufacturers have become quite good at making their labels work for them. As Charles Revson, the founder of Revlon, famously said, “in the factory we manufacture cosmetics; in the store we sell hope.”

No small order, selling hope. Let’s start with the label: “Softer, smoother looking skin.” “Younger looking skin from the first use.”  “Eliminates the look of lines and wrinkles.”  “For a more beautiful you.”  “You’re worth it.”  Hope, it seems, springs eternal!

While producing cosmetics labels that “sell” may seem like an art, it is actually a combination of art and government-regulated science. In virtually every developed country, there is a government agency
