L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in green, black, white and oolong teas. Green tea contains the highest concentration. In fact, L-theanine is responsible for green tea's distinctive flavor.
L-theanine promotes relaxation and reduces stress while improving mental focus. It is useful for combating the mid-afternoon lows, or when working late, especially shift workers. L-Theanine is made from the amino acid L-Glutamine and has a positive effect on brain chemistry. It increases dopamine and effectively promotes Alpha wave generation which produces an alert, yet relaxed, mental state (the optimal state for learning). Although tea contains caffeine, L-Theanine counters its effects, which explains why green tea doesn't cause the jitters or keep you up at night.
If you choose to supplement (ask your doctor for details), 200 mg of L-theanine daily in divided doses is recommended. One cup of green tea provides a maximum of 50 mg of L-theanine. The effects are felt within thirty minutes of consumption. There are no known side effects associated with the use of L-theanine.
Tomorrow morning, try a cup of green tea in place of your morning coffee!
