Fiber’s multiple health benefits extend well beyond optimal bowel function. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that a higher intake of dietary fiber is associated with a slower rate of lung function decline and a lower incidence of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). In this two-year study, of the 11,897 subjects, those who consumed 27 grams of fiber daily had better lung function compared with those with the lowest fiber intake (9.5 grams). The benefits are being attributed to phytochemicals (potent antioxidants) in grains – nutrients previously thought to be useful only if derived from fruits and vegetables. Fiber is provided by whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. Aim for 25 to 50 grams daily. |
