Spirulina

Widely used as a nutritional supplement since the 1970’s, spirulina is making a comeback and is being touted as a “food of the future.” This swirling, spiral-shaped single-celled organism is a blue-green algae that was first discovered in the natural alkaline lakes of South America and Africa. It is a remarkable food source and natural energizer.

Spirulina is often described as the most complete food source in the world with its combination of over 100 nutrients and an impressive 60% protein content. In fact, NASA includes it in their astronaut’s diet and plans to grow spirulina in its space station! Spirulina’s biggest fans, however, are the Japanese, who both produce and consume more of it than anyone else. Some Japanese researchers claim that spirulina’s rich concentration of nutrients helps diabetics decrease their insulin intake. Spirulina contains high concentrations of many nutrients in an easily assimilated form which include: chlorophyll, amino acids, chelated minerals, trace minerals, antioxidants, vitamins, rhamnose sugars (complex natural plant sugars), and enzymes. It supplies five times more beta-carotene than carrots and 40 times more than spinach! Furthermore, spirulina is the only known source of phycocyanin, an antioxidant and natural anti-inflammatory agent. Phycocyanin is gaining importance as a non-toxic, non-carcinogenic natural colorant that is used in dairy products, soft drinks, desserts, and cosmetics. Because of the many uses of spirulina, it is estimated that worldwide spirulina production will reach 220,000 tons by the year 2020.

Spirulina is available as a food supplement in tablet or powder form. It is appropriate for anyone as a source of additional nutrients, and especially beneficial for vegetarians seeking an alternative protein source. Teenagers, seniors, and athletes who have difficulty meeting their nutrient needs can greatly benefit from supplementation with spirulina. Spirulina also provides an instant pick-me-up when you are feeling physically or mentally fatigued.

One serving of spirulina supplies the nutritional equivalent of two servings of fresh vegetables. When mixed with water, spirulina is absorbed almost immediately. Once opened, discard spirulina after six months. Keep the container tightly sealed and away from heat or exposure to sun and bright light.
