Phosphatidylserine (PS) for Memory

Phosphatidylserine, or PS, is the major phospho-lipid (fatty substance) in the brain and comprises 7-10% of its lipid content. The nutrient is essential for the integrity of neuronal cell membranes. Without sufficient PS, brain cells cannot properly communicate with other brain cells. When we reach middle age, our PS levels naturally begin to decline leading to memory loss and cognitive decline.

Clinical studies have shown that PS supplementation improves mental function, mood and behavior in the elderly, including those in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

PS is found in fish, green leafy vegetables, soybeans, and rice. Although lecithin (phosphatidylcholine) has been available as a supplement for many decades, PS (phosphatidylserine) didn’t become available in the North American market until the mid 1990s. The PS currently available over the counter is derived from soya and has no side effects. The recommended dosage is 300 mg a day in divided doses – that’s 100 mg three times a day.
