
Q: There are a lot of types of protein and I’ve heard that isolate is better because of absorption, but I’ve also heard the opposite. What is your opinion? Thank you. –Dolores
A: You’re right, there are many types of protein and brands to choose from. Whey Protein can be made of concentrate, isolate or a combination of the two. Isolate is more expensive than concentrate but it has a higher Biological Value (BV), which means that it’s absorbed more efficiently. Most athletes, however, find that a combination of isolate and concentrate provides the best results. Luckily, many high quality brands of protein powders are composed of a blend of isolate and concentrate (both will be listed on the ingredients label). While you’re inspecting the ingredients, ensure that the product is free of aspartame, sucralose, simple sugars, artificial flavors, colors, or any other artificial ingredients.
