Facebook and Twitter can be used to help share news and ideas about eco-friendly living. Social networking enables us to be interconnected in ways we have never before been, reconnecting old friends, revealing mutual friends and acquaintances, and bringing strangers with common interests together.

Not only does social networking make staying connected easier, it also presents great opportunities for individuals to support and encourage eco-friendly acts. Here are simple tips to help you share green news and tips with others via social networking platforms.

Facebook

Many environmental organizations have Facebook pages, and becoming a fan of these organizations will plug you into each organization's latest news. Greenpeace International, Environmental Working Group, World Wildlife Fund, and the David Suzuki Foundation all have Facebook pages.

You can make the most of being a fan of these organizations by using the Share tool to spread the word to your friends.

Twitter

There are tons of Twitter users who are tweeting green news and tips every day. From @TreeHugger for the latest green news to @EcoExploration for everything eco travel, there's something for everybody—whether you're as green as can be or are taking baby steps to a greener life.

Retweeting green news from your favorite green tweeters is the simplest (and quickest) way to share green news and tips with your followers. You can also use twitpics to share photos of environmental events, or even just pictures of you doing your part for the environment.

Flickr

If you're a shutterbug, consider the ways your photography can help spread the word about eco-friendly living. Take photos at green events, or post photos of your or your family's efforts to go green, and upload these images to Flickr, an online photo management and sharing application.

When you're posting images on Flickr, be sure to use tags to make it easy for Flickr users to find your green photos. Useful tags include: green, environment, nature, landscape, water, trees, ecology, eco, and recycled.

You can also create a group that becomes a virtual gallery, allowing you to create a collection of images that focus on a specific environmental issue—recycling, for example.

Blogging

Whether you're using Blogger, Wordpress, LiveJournal, MySpace or some other blogging platform, an online forum for talking about your efforts to go green is a great way to share your interests with others. Many blogging platforms link users with tags or by allowing readers to follow specific blogs.

Blogging can be more time consuming than Facebook or Twitter, but you can also say a lot more—and you can use all forms of communication, from text and photos to audio and video content. Plus, you can use other social networking websites to promote your blog.

If you're interested in building a green following, be sure to post to your blog regularly. It doesn't matter if you only post once a week or every day, just that you keep it consistent. And make sure you have an RSS feed so your readers can automatically receive new posts without having to check your site every day or each week.
