Why do you hate cloth diapers so?
Why does the fact that we are choosing to use them bother you?
It’s only parents that have decided to use disposable diapers that give us a hard time about our decision.
In disbelief, “You won’t have time to worry about washing diapers,” they say. I smile and nod in apparent agreement while thinking of all the parents I know who have used and who are currently successfully using them. Why does she “have time” while you do not?
In my mind it’s a question of priorities. For environmental reasons, I choose (when not pregnant, of course!) to use a Diva Cup. This reusable menstrual cup cuts down on a massive amount of non-recyclable waste in my life. If I am so conscious of not using tampons and pads in my own life, why would I start filling up the landfill once my baby is born?
A diaper takes half a millennium to biodegrade. As if that wasn’t bad enough, some people can somehow justify the use of one of man’s STUPIDEST inventions: The Diaper Genie. Let’s take something that was already going to take 500 years to go away and tightly wrap it in layers of scented plastic. Great idea.
We recently received our shipment of Mother-ease diapers. I couldn’t be happier with the decision to buy them. For less than $400 we have enough diapers for this and any child that will come after her. (How much per year would we spend per child on disposables?)
We opted for two days worth (24 diapers) so that in theory I won’t have to wash diapers every single day. I’m debating even getting a few extra if I find a good deal on used ones.
There are so many diapers out there I was at first overwhelmed and almost gave up on looking for the right one. Snaps? Velcro? One-size fits all? Prefolds?
My solution was to let a friend figure it out for me. (I’m learning this is best to do in every parenting case!) Our friends ordered Mother-ease diapers, which were suggested by a friend of theirs. After a few weeks of using them, we asked her and her husband how it was going, and they were pretty impressed. Then we babysat the Mother-ease baby wearing Liv, and found out first-hand that these snap-up one-size fits all made in St. Catharines Ont. diapers were very easy to use.
It always comes down to what you can justify. If you can justify throwing all those diapers into the landfill, go for it. Just don’t you dare tell me how much time I’ll have to do laundry.
