Many parents ask me how to get their kids to read more. In today's world of computer games and television, it can feel like a daunting task. Here are some tips to help encourage kids to read.
Model, model, model. Be seen reading books so your kids follow in your footsteps.
Sign up for a library card and take your child to the library once a week.
Keep a list on the refrigerator on what books each member of the family has read that month.
Read out loud to your children often. Age doesn't matter. Everyone likes to be read to.
Get books on tape so you can all listen to them in the car. Or make your own.
Trade time on the computer for time reading.
Talk about what you're reading. Make it fun to discuss literature. Don't be afraid to express what you like or don't like about a book.
Don't worry if your child doesn't finish a book. He may not like it, and that's OK.
While books can be expensive, do take your child to the bookstore once in a while and have her pick out her own purchase.
Take turns reading stories to each other while on car rides.
Have a family reading night where no one watches TV or gets on the computer.
New Book Launch for Young Readers
I recently had the pleasure of being asked to review a new children's book called Elffolk and the Crystal Caves of Atlantis by Tina McFadden. This delightful story is fantasy-adventure for children aged seven to 10.
Thousands of years ago, on the mythical island of Atlantis, there were signs of a coming disaster. The very first omens were earthquakes. When one strikes the village of Elffolk, an elderly elf becomes trapped in some crystal caves. Nissa and Enna, two young elves, must save her. But their rescue mission isn't easy. Dark magic lurks in the caves. Danger is around every turn, and nothing is at it seems.
This book will delight. The magic and mystery keep readers engaged right until the very end. You can read it aloud at bedtime, a few chapters at a time, or let your child have at it on his own.
Tina McFadden is a Canadian author who lives in Calgary. While not new to writing, she has published articles in magazines, newspapers and the web, as well as short stories for adults and children, Elffolk and the Crystal Caves of Atlantis is her first novel.
