Most of us in the west come from a culture that does not breed or cultivate awareness. We tend to subscribe to an ethic that equates success of one kind or another with personal value and worth.
Naturally this creates an inherent and deep internal antagonism that perpetuates a cycle of feeling inadequate and tense. Is it any wonder that everyone is tired and stressed out? Why is it we feel that just being “ourselves” is not enough? If we cannot begin to see the perfection in our imperfection and our individual value in just “being who we are”, how can we expect to see it others? How can we see the good outside ourselves if we cannot embrace it within ourselves first?
To me, this is what the gift of meditation and awareness can do for us. They give us the opportunity to reorganize our beliefs and create light within. Tension and stress are not things that come from outside ourselves, rather they are things caused by how we internalize thoughts and fears of external things. As we delve into the depths of self we can begin to invite illumination into the darkness and discover our divine wisdom, our intuition and internal language and deepen our connection with all things. As you practice awareness and turn that attention within you begin to live more presently and you begin to understand that the body and mind are a single system and not two separate entities.
In teaching meditation for several years I have witnessed a misconception in peoples’ perception of the process. Many people think that the key to the meditation process is about relaxation and this is what makes it more challenging for them. Truly the meditative process begins with simple awareness, and as this awareness grows relaxation is naturally born in the body-mind.
As we now sit on the crest of Spring I cannot think of a better time for practicing awareness and turning within. It’s as if there are miracles happening in nature every moment, so much so that a simple 15 minute walk can become a wondrous experience and an opportunity to create internal light.
In a time where socially and globally we are in such a chaotic state of change, it is a perfect opportunity to turn inwards with awareness of our individualism. It is a perfect time for each of us to acknowledge what we have to offer the world and a chance to embrace our true light. If we can do this it will become easier to see that beauty and light in those around us, and help to practice compassion and kindness for all beings.
Just 10 or 15 minutes a day to walk and/or sit in awareness; to be in your body and become aware of your breath or the sounds around you; to pull all your focus on just “being” and to feel your internal light shining through. A little effort with a massive impact personally, energetically socially and globally…and its free!
Change truly does happen one tiny step at a time. Imagine being lighter and happier all the time – it’s in your grasp! What a calmer happier place this could be if we all loved ourselves enough to look inward with love and acceptance of who we are.
You are perfect right now, as is, with lots to contribute. You have deep value to us all and to humanity. Just look inside and be willing to see and feel this yourself. There is no better time than now, and nature in its season of Spring is supporting you in this rebirth.
