Q: I wake up in the morning with a flat belly, but it’s bloated by the middle of the day, usually starting after breakfast. What am I doing wrong? -Naoma

A: There are several reasons why bloating can occur. Since the bloating appears after you’ve eaten, it could be the result of food intolerance. Gluten (or wheat) and dairy are the most common culprits associated with bloating. Go without these ingredients for several days. If the bloating disappears, reintroduce them one at a time. If one (or both) of these ingredients is the cause, the bloating will recur immediately. Another reason for bloating is constipation. Less than one large bowel movement daily is an indication that you’re ‘backed up’. Gradually increase water and fiber consumption to keep the bowels moving. Finally, limit your overall intake of starchy foods (bread, rice, pasta, etc.). These foods contribute to belly bloat and overall water retention. Replace them with vegetables and fruit.
