Q: Hi Dr. Rona,
I've been following your Anti-Canadia diet for almost a year now but I have had persistent nipple thrush/vaginal yeast infections for almost 4 years now and I am unable to get rid of it despite the recommendations in your book (I have also been to Newman's clinic several times but his protocol of GFS extract did not help me either, though I am able to keep the nipple thrush at bay now with daily apple cidar vinegar soaks diluted with distilled water). I am still breastfeeding my son but I am hoping to wean him sometime in the next year and do a chelation for heavy metals because I believe that is the root cause of my problems since they began a few months after I had 6 amalgam fillings removed all in one day and the dentist (nor I at the time) was not familiar with the protocol outlined byIAOMT (as outlined here). Incidently around the same time my yeast problems started I started getting symptoms very similar to IBD (i.e. colon bleeding, stomach pain, gas, indigestion, nausea etc) but I have been able to keep that at bay mostly through glutan free/dairy free/sugar free diet (though I still eat white grapefruit and berries sometimes since that is allowed occassionally as per your book).
I have one amalgam filling left which I plan to remove with a biological dentist after I stop breastfeeding. Unfortunately I made the mistake of trying to chelate using chlorella and ALA but I believe that I may have made my problems worse because my immune system is now very weak and I am catching every cold/flu etc that comes my way (plus my lymph glands in my throat seem to always be swollen/painful now and I have incredible fatigue). I have since read a lot on chelation, including Andy Culter (phd chemist) protocol (you can read more about his protocol at http://www.noamalgam.com/). Andy believes that ALA can cross the blood brain barrier and both chlorella and ALA can cause redistribution of mercury and hence more health problems. I have also since learned that even natural detoxing is not a good idea during breastfeeding so I have no idea how I am going to survive until I wean my son (who is not ready to be weaned at all) as I am constantly sick.
Do you have any advice? My mother recently e-mailed you and from her I learned that you do still accept new patients.
Could you give me the details. Since your clinic is private, what are the fees?
A: It's hard for me to deal very accurately with a complicated situation such as yours without the benefit of an examination and lab tests but I can certainly make a few comments that you can consider. People that have documented candida for longer than 6 months usually will not respond to more natural therapies and require prescription anti-fungal drugs. This is not something that one should do if still breast feeding due to potential harm to the child. You may also need intravenous chelation therapy for toxic heavy metals. When you stop breast feeding, you are welcome to come in to my office for an assessment and treatment. Information about my practice as well as office policies and fees is available on my web site at http://www.mydoctor.ca/
