Q: What foods should people with ADD avoid? Are there any foods that would help reduce ADD symptoms? -Natalie

A: Foods or substances that can exacerbate ADD vary from person to person. The Feingold Program (also known as the Feingold Diet) can help you determine if certain foods or food additives are triggering particular symptoms. Visit the Feingold website for full details.

Additives, including food coloring (such as tartrazine or yellow #5) and sodium benzoate can elicit a reaction from those with ADD. Salicylates, aspirin-like compounds present in certain foods, can trigger specific brain reactions leading to changes in behavior. Salicylates are found in many foods such as almonds, apricots, and some apples. A full list and protocol can be obtained from Dr. Feingold's organization.

Foods that may aggravate ADD include:
Sugar
• White flour pasta, breads, desserts, granola bars, anything made with wheat flour
• Dairy (cow's), including milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt
• Peanuts
• Corn (unless whole grain & organic)
• Dried fruits (because of molds, sulfites, colourings, sugar)
• Aspartame, trans fats, margarines
• Caffeinated beverages & pop
• Fruit juices (as a sweetener or in desserts)
• Fast food, processed food
• Aspartame

Those with ADD tend to have low levels of omega-3 (EPA/DHA). Supplement the diet with at least 2,000 mg of omega-3 daily.
