A: While bread made from whole grains (as opposed to white flour products) is much better for overall health, its impact on hypertension is minimal. Both brown and white breads generally contain the same amount of sodium. Cornbread is a starch – as is whole wheat – but whether or not it’s recommended depends on a few factors: is it homemade or packaged? If it’s packaged, read the Nutrition Facts panel and the list of ingredients. For high blood pressure, you will want to purchase products with a low sodium content. It may also contain quite a bit of sugar and fat. If it’s homemade, you can control the ingredients. Find recipes that use minimal salt, sugar, and butter (unsalted butter only).
