Constipation Stuggles fiber flaxseeds chia salba water digestion probiotics

Q: I am 47 years old and going through perimenopause.  I am really struggling with consipation.  I drink 3 - 4 litres of water per day and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I use flax seed and Udo's Oil (2 - 4 Tablespoons per day).  I also take digestive enzymes and a good probiotic. I've had constipation problems most of my life..... it seems to be worse now with the hormonal change. Is there anything that you can recommend?  -Louise

A: Hi Louise,
While the diet and supplements you mentioned are often enough to prevent constipation, throw female hormones (or declining hormones!) into the mix and bowel function often changes. Increase your fiber intake from beans, lentils, and whole grains (if well-tolerated) like oats, brown rice, and buckwheat, and (or) add a fiber supplement (are you using flax seed or flax seed oil? The oil doesn't provide any fiber). Gentle fiber sources include ground flax seed, psyllium, and Salba (or chia). Begin with a small amount (1 tsp.) and gradually increase to 2 tbsp. a day. When you increase fiber in your diet, it is best to also increase water consumption. Fiber and water work together in the colon.

You may also consider a colon cleanse (try RenewLife products) or colon hydrotherapy for a "clean" start.
