garlic_remediesIn recent blogs, I have discussed garlic being a natural remedy for colds and flus as well as how to make Garlic Tea and how to use garlic externally in a remedy called GOOT.

Many years ago I was taking a short course at Rosemary Gladstar’s Sage Mountain and the speaker made this amazing garlic/honey/lemon mixture for fighting colds and flus.

I have looked for the remedy and found these suggestions.

Enjoy!

Recipe 1: Garlic Honey

  1. Peel the garlic cloves and put them in a medium-size jar.

  2. Add honey to just cover the garlic and then set it on a sunny windowsill until the garlic has turned partly opaque and the honey tastes strongly of garlic.

  3. Take a teaspoon every few hours or whenever necessary to relieve cough, sore throat, etc.

Recipe 2: Homemade Cough Syrup

This one is much closer to what I remember. I did make some and wow, it is definitely powerful!

Take ½–3 teaspoons every two hours. If the cold or flu is very strong, take every hour.

  1. Garlic and Lemon: Cut a lemon in half and squeeze out the juice into a bowl. Use a citrus juicer or a fork. Insert it into the lemon and twist the lemon to release all of the juice. Scrape off the pulp, as well. Lemons have hot and dry qualities, which is the opposite of a cold. It cuts and dissolves phlegm, making it a suitable agent against both the cold and flu. (I suggest using a scraper to get most of the peel as well.)

  2. Next, use your fine grater to grate 1–3 cloves of fresh garlic, according to what you can tolerate. Mix this in with the lemon juice. Garlic is also hot in nature, and its moisture quality also helps it dissolve and break down phlegm, especially in the throat and chest.

  3. Add an equal amount of honey as there is lemon juice. Honey is excellent for colds because it also dissolves phlegm. It is also a natural preservative, and it kills infections. It is an excellent food, drink, and remedy.

  4. Mix all ingredients together and store in a glass jar with a lid. Refrigerating the mixture makes it cool and more suitable for children, while keeping it at room temperature will give the garlic extra potency. The mixture will keep longer if refrigerated.

Variations: Try adding any of the following:

  • Freshly grated ginger

  • Ground cayenne pepper

  • ½ tsp ground horehound

  • 1 tsp wild cherry bark

  • Fresh/dried peppermint
