dulse seaweed, edible seaweed, brown seaweed, seaweed, fucoxanthin, sea weed, fucoidan, health benefits, benefits, sea veg, mercury, seaweeds,Q: I'm trying to incorporate dulse into my diet on a regular basis for its rich nutritional benefits, but I'm concerned that because the ocean is so dirty now, I'm doing myself more harm than good. Should I avoid dulse then? -Veronica

A: Ocean contaminants store in the fat cells of fish and shellfish. Since seaweeds like dulse have virtually no fat, there is no place to store mercury, PCBs, or other metals. In fact, their high mineral content helps the body detoxify such poisons. Wash your seaweed before using if you're concerned, but it really isn't necessary.
