Detoxification practices have been used through the ages. Is this a practice we have forgotten?
It seems that lately there has been resurgence in internal cleansing. Commonly, I hear of people purchasing home detox kits they have purchased from a health food store.
While performing these cleanses is a good idea, it is advised that the incorporation of any herb or nutrient be under the supervision of a health care provider. For example:
Certain herbs and vitamins may interact with a medication you may be taking.
Fasting—a common method to increase elimination—would not be a suitable approach for diabetics.
If there is a history of regular alcohol consumption, your holistic health care provider may consider the use of herbs such as milk thistle to support the liver.
If constipation is a common occurrence, a colon cleanse may be considered.
These are only a few examples which highlight the need for supervision while performing a detoxification plan. In addition, detox programs should be individualized as each of us has a unique toxin burden.
Why Cleanse?
Our bodies are faced with an increasing number of toxic compounds in our air, water, and food. The cumulative effect of toxin exposure can impact our overall health.
There are many different types of toxins such as heavy metals (lead, aluminum, cadmium, and arsenic), pesticides, and solvents. These toxins can accumulate in the body and lead to detrimental effects on the immune system and impair normal metabolic function.
Did you know that some occupations have a higher exposure to heavy metals? Dentists, jewelers, battery makers, and gas station attendants are examples of some of these jobs. Workers in these positions can benefit from regular detoxification practices. Talk to any friends and family who may be faced with an increased environmental toxin burden.
Detox Tips
While it is difficult to escape environmental exposure, there are some lifestyle approaches that can assist with the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Avoid excessive intake of alcohol, which can impair the liver.
Eat a diet that incorporates fresh, organic fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
Eliminate foods that “stress” the body—such as saturated fats, fried foods, and caffeinated products.
Increase physical activity to improve circulation and boost the immune system.
Seek the guidance of an herbalist, Naturopathic Doctor, or other holistic healthcare provider to perform an individualized cleanse.
Keep hydrated and drink water throughout the day.
Sleep at least 6 to 8 hours per day to allow the body to rest and rejuvenate.Consider the use of herbs or nutritional supplements to support and enhance liver function. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if this is appropriate for you.
Incorporate stress-relieving practices—such as yoga, Tai Chi, or Nia—to promote a strong immune system.
This spring, while cleaning out the closet or recycling any unused household items, take the time to consider whether a detoxification protocol may be part of your regular cleansing regime.
Good luck!
