Fish oil contains the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). For adults, EPA is considered beneficial for mental conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, and suicidal behavior.
EPA is a natural anti-inflammatory, a blood thinner, and helps regulate hormones. The US National Institute of Health's MedlinePluslists a large number of conditions in which EPA (alone or in concert with other omega-3 sources) is known or believed to be effective. Most of these involve its ability to lower inflammation.
Most experts recommend a daily dosage of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA combined. Fish oils with high amounts of EPA are recommended for most adults; however DHA is more important for a child’s development. The ratio of EPA to DHA depends on the type of fish oil you purchase. Many fish oil supplements contain 300 mg of combined EPA and DHA (180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA). “Concentrated” fish oil supplements may contain 500 to 600 mg of EPA and DHA. Eating fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies) 2 - 3 times a week provides approximately 1,250 mg of EPA plus DHA per day.
