20 Ways to Start Going Green Today

1 Recycle and buy recycled products. Recycling reduced need for virgin materials and helps reduce energy consumption in manfacturing. Recyclables: Glass, plastic, cardboard, aluminum cans, paper and newspapers.
2 Choose energy efficient products such as cars, computers, printers, windows and household appliances such as washer, dryers and dishwashers by looking for the Energy Star label. These products use less energy and help save you money in the long run.
3 Turn off the lights when you leave the room.
4 Unplug your appliances such as the kettle, computer and toaster oven when are not in use.
5 Replace burnt-out light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use one quarter of the energy as regular incandescent bulbs and last up to ten times longer.
6 Place plants around your house and plant trees in your garden to absorb carbon dioxide and produce fresh oxygen.
7 Switch to programmable thermostats. At night when you are sleeping or when you aren’t home, lower the temperature in the winter and raise it in the summer to save electricity and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
8 Schedule regular maintenance checks and change the air filters on your furnace and air conditioners regularly.
9 Use solar lighting for your patio instead of electric lighting. Solar lights are inexpensive and can be purchased at your local hardware store.
10 Visit your local farmer’s market. Buying seasonal, local and organic products help to reduce:
i. Energy used in shipping the products from the farms to your plates
ii. Un-recyclable packaging
iii. Greenhouse gasses.
11 Reuse packaging such as plastic bags as much as possible. Bring cloth bags to the store and garment bags to the drycleaner instead of using their plastic bags.
12 Save paper by sending e-vites instead of mailed invitations to help cut down on paper consumption. If you do send paper invites, choose recycled paper in order to avoid new trees being cut down.
13 Use an energy efficient dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand. It uses less water when filled to capacity.
14 Use cold or warm water to wash your clothes. This will save energy by not having to heat the water.
15 Set your hot water thermostat to 121 degrees F.
16 Try composting your garbage.
17 Drive less. Walk, ride your bike, take the bus or carpool to work.
18 Turn off your car when you are not moving. Leaving your car idling for more than 10 seconds creates major pollution and wastes gas.
19 Drive a hybrid or fuel-efficient car. Some of the worst offenders are SUVs.
20 Renovate your home with eco-friendly products and materials such as low- or no-VOC paint, bamboo or cork flooring and/or formaldehyde-free furniture and carpeting.
