Join the "Pets for the Planet" mission!
Several years ago, a small group of people with similar “green” goals developed a plan which they believed would help preserve the sustainability of the Earth. The basic concept was simple – help family farms by producing pet food in an environmentally friendly way that is good for the Earth and benefits farm animals. The result was Pet Promise pet food. Today, Pet Promise makes a significant impact in sustaining our environment and improving the health of our pets in addition to helping family farms.
Pet Promise demonstrates how our pets can help protect the earth in some pretty dramatic ways. For example, since 2005, Pet Promise has helped eliminate over 100 million doses of antibiotics in the food chain and more than 18 million doses of artificial growth hormones which are usually given to cattle. The company has purchased over four million pounds of natural meat and poultry to make its products. They also support over 1,500 U.S. family farmers who are committed to sustainable methods of agriculture and the humane treatment of farm animals.
Now, with more and more interest in ways of reducing our carbon footprint, many pet owners asked Pet Promise for ideas on how they can reduce their pets’ carbon “paw prints” as well. In response, after consulting with various experts, the company put together a list of some very effective ways to help your dog or cat become part of the green movement. To further the concept, they have launched a program called “Pets for the Planet” to provide tips and resources to get your pet on greener footing.
To help get you and your pet started on a greener path, here are ten tips you can put into action that are both healthier for the whole family and easy to accomplish.
- Buy high-quality natural pet food made from pure protein sources raised without growth hormones or antibiotics. In addition, verify they do not contain any animal byproducts, rendered meat or chicken meals.
- Use all natural cleaning products, free of toxic chemicals, which are safe for pets and eco-friendly!
- Utilize natural lawn-care products without pesticides or herbicides. Encourage your neighbors to do likewise.
- Find eco-friendly toys for your pet that are made from organic or recycled materials.
- Purchase alternative forms of kitty litter made from recycled material such as newsprint.
- Provide your pet with bedding from recycled materials, including old pillows, quilts, or other comfy items.
- Include biodegradable poop bags as part of your daily walk routine.
- Make sure all your pet grooming products are eco-friendly and made without phosphates, sulfates and other chemicals.
- Use the safest, least toxic methods of controlling fleas and ticks. Be sure any product you apply contains only natural ingredients.
- Bring a reusable container for water when traveling with your pet.
Remember -- our actions, both big and small, do add up. This includes how we care for our animal companions. In addition to being healthy for your dog or cat, when you use a more environmentally friendly approach to caring for your pets, it’s good for the planet as well. The Pet Promise concept was based on the idea of helping sustain family farms. Now look at how far reaching this idea has become in just a few short years!
