I suspect that every dream has some “God Content.” I can’t ‘prove’ it in a clinical way, but if we pay attention to our dreams, it becomes evident in short order. I believe this to be true of nightmares as well as dreams that are filled with the trivia of our lives, and other seemingly “unspiritual” types of dreams. We dream all of who we are, in our common humanity and lowest impulses to our highest most soulful selves. And if we believe, as many do, that God isn’t only an external force, but the very stuff that we are made of we are — even our cells are ensouled — then we cannot help but “dream God.” My friend’s husband had this dream:
I was sleeping and suddenly heard a voice tell me that I was "going to meet God.” I entered into dream-state and found myself in the hallway outside my old bedroom where I grew up. I felt a sense of excitement at the prospect of meeting the Big Fella. I saw a smoky shadow that became stronger and stronger and eventually manifested into two figures wearing dark hooded robes, similar to monk's attire. The robes were made of some kind of beautiful velvet-type cloth that caught the light as it moved. One of the figures took off his robe and I felt an overwhelming warmth coming from him. I knew instantly that he was God. I was surprised at how he looked — bald and wearing a red turtleneck. He looked similar to Ghandi — but without the glasses. I told him I was expecting him to be dressed in white with a long beard but he said that he is able to manifest into a form that is comfortable to whoever he visits. I felt drawn to his warmth so I asked if I could give him a hug and he said "yes." I began to hug him and he became without form and instead was a brilliant, powerful white light. It was a spellbinding light that was even brighter than the sun yet I could still look directly into it. On the edges of this magnificent light were fingers of pure white crystals. I suddenly felt this feeling of euphoria - every positive emotion such as love, happiness, joy, gratitude and peace, that I've ever experienced in my whole life, suddenly became compounded and amplified to this one moment filling every pore of my body.
Within this state, he asked me if I had any questions. It's not everyday you're put on the spot by God so I was a little overwhelmed, to say the least. All I could ask was " Am I on the right path?" to which he replied, "You are always on the right path." Looking back, I wish I had asked something more meaningful, like, "What is the cure for cancer?"
He then told me that while on earth, he is protected by archangels that take the form of white stallions. He showed me these beautiful horses and began to say the name of each archangel they represented. As he said each name, I could see a human-like face for a brief second within the horses. I was expecting the names to be Michael, Gabriel, etc but he spoke them in a language I didn't understand. I'm not sure why I was shown this but it felt important. He said that it was time to go and that he could leave the earth in any form. I was then at an airport watching a plane take off and knew that was him in earthbound form.
Suddenly, I was in space, looking back at the earth. I saw a speck of light on the earth that grew brighter and brighter. I saw it move across the earth and then leave and ascend into space. I thought "Wow, what an exit!"
Admittedly, this is not an “everyday dream,” but it was important to share this with you for several reasons. First, the man who had this dream is a regular guy. And while his dream didn’t have a life-changing effect on him, it has been a very important dream to share with others who seem to need it more than he. It is also important because it shows God in an understandable and everyday context (bald and wearing a red turtleneck, no less), illustrating how spiritual dreams are not always accompanied by an angelic choir and may be clothed in the everyday stuff that make up our dreams. Start watching your own dreams for their “God Content” and you may find the sacred in the small details of your dreams.
