Getting set to celebrate Independence Day?
What most don't realize is that those 56 men led by Thomas Jefferson on July 4 back in 1776 signed their names to a document that they knew full well would either bring about freedom to all Americans or leave every one of them hanging from the gallows.
What some call the greatest decision of all time broke the rules.
If you look back over history or your own life, you will note countless examples of the rules being broken in pursuit of just progress. When I veered off the path at age 28 to begin a career in radio at $4.25 an hour, I tore the rules up and threw them away.
Oh, I could hear the whispers of the rule makers. "He can't do that—leave a good job and go off chasing this rabbit when he has a family to support and responsibilities."
The rules you should be looking to break are the ones cast by society that say you shouldn't or couldn't or won't be able to do this or become that and here are all the reasons why.Use the signing of the Declaration of Independence as the guidepost of your future flirtings with the law. Those who signed it knew they risked certain death. Ask yourself, when you challenge the next rule, what would be the worst outcome? Chances are you most likely will not see a rope hanging anywhere near you.
The caviat to this is that there are rules that you should never break. These rules are:
- Live an authentic life.
- Discover your passion.
- Live your life knowing there has never been another greater or lesser than you.
- What you can become in life is clearly of your choosing.
The words of the Declaration say just that:
"... that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
Break some rules and feel yourself come alive.
Have an excellent day.
