September is host to the legendary New York Fashion Week, and the iconic September Issue of Vogue magazine graces newsstands. It's a time of excitement, innovation and the re-invention of style.

Unfortunately, most of us aren't lucky enough to snag those first row seats to Diane Von Furstenberg's and Michael Kors' shows, and the current times have made it difficult to justify a new wardrobe for each changing season. But even penny pinchers can afford an updated—and green—fall wardrobe with these tips and trends for fierce fall style.

Leopard Print

Hands down, this season's number one trend is leopard. This playful print is showing up on everything from skirts and blouses to handbags and shoes. Feeling reserved about trying this daring trend? Start small and simple by pairing dainty leopard print ballet flats or a small clutch with a simple outfit.

Go Green: We love Bourgeois Boheme's BoBo Priya leopard print flats, which are handcrafted in India. Bourgeois Boheme's business policy is centered around compassion for humans, animals, and the environment.

Neon

Remember the traffic-stopping yellows, oranges, pinks and greens of the 1980s? They're back in full force! Refresh the look by combining these brights with black—it makes the colors pop and keeps you from looking outdated.

Go Green: Hunt for neon sunglasses and accessories at thrift shops, and don't forget to be on the lookout for oversized 80s-era clothing that can be tailored to fit you perfectly.

Posh Punk

Fashion magazines are filled with the posh punk look, which embraces the edgier side of fashion—think metal detailing, studs, grommets and zippers. It's all about the juxtaposition of opposites—try a classic pencil skirt with a visible zipper worn with your favorite black tank and a couple of layers of chunky, metal necklaces. The result is tough plus girly and 100 percent fashion-forward.

Go Green: Look for vintage or recycled metal jewelry on Etsy.com, an online community built around individual handmade and vintage goods sellers.

Start Some Drama

By now you have probably noticed the overall trend for this fall's fashion is all about making a statement. Fashion has always been and will continue to be experimental, and this rule is not confined to the catwalk. This fall, make a promise to yourself to push the boundaries of your own style just a little further. It never hurts to just try something one because you never know if that leopard dress or day-glo pair of leggings is going to being a fashion hit or miss on you. Even in the midst of a recession, allowing yourself to have a few small indulgences will make you feel luxurious and special—just a little velvet, lace, or animal print can go a long way in making you feel like a queen.

Go Green: Mine local vintage and second-hand stores for velvet and lace items, and don't forget to dig through your mother's closet for some vintage finds.

Celebrate fashion's favorite month with a few updates to your wardrobe. On a budget? Take inventory of your closet and you may be surprised which pieces can be recycled and combined in new ways to give your clothes that extra boost that's worthy of Vogue fashion spread.
