My subscription to Elle Magazine started when I was in the 4th grade, while most other girls were ogling Tiger Beat (don’t get me wrong, I ogled Tiger Beat too). I think it all began when my mother sent me to my first day of Kindergarten in a white ballet neck tee that read my name, D-E-A-N-A, on the front and a knee-length denim wrap skirt. I believe it was then that I took hold of my own fashion destiny and back-to-school shopping became my favorite time of the year. And now, back-to-school shopping is again very exciting to me because finally there are some stylish “eco” options for students.

Organic Cotton Jacket

To avoid incidents like the D-E-A-N-A debacle, I’ve always thought it made sense to dress kids like little adults –not too serious, but also not overly playful. A perfect example, the organic cotton Variola Jacket by Sustainable Kids, is polished and cozy at the same time. A great piece to make recess time just a bit more stylish!

Floral Without Being Frilly

Floral without-being-frilly Ditsy print top by Kite Kids is something I could see myself wearing now and would have loved when I was young. Pair this beauty with a pair of leggings and mary janes and your little girl is good to go.

Rocker Edge

And for your little dude (or Tomboy), the organic cotton Hawk Polo has a bit of a rocker edge while paying homage to a beautiful creature.

Recycled Vest

Or for a chic, but gender versatile piece (perfect for hand-me-downs), for your little Marlene Dietrich, Annie Hall or Iggy Pop – opt for the Recycled Vest by Sustainable Kids. Pair this with anything from dresses to tees to collared uniform shirts and your kid will be seriously styling!

Splash Proof Laptop Sleeve

I also remember that being stylish at school went beyond just clothing. My “Trapper Keeper” was a part of my fashion statement  and I guess today’s version of that would be a laptop sleeve. The Hoptu by Looptworks is super cool and made from excess wetsuit material. Win-win!

Green Earrings

Finally, because accessories are imperative for back-to-school fashion, treat your daughter to the oh-so-sweet recycled silver Lake Mead flower earrings by Green Diva.

Modern and Masculine
Send your son packing with the vegan, masculine and modern Harrison bag by RozCoo.

Class dismissed!
