Dioxins: The Facts about this Toxin in Tampons and Sanitary Pads

Feminine hygiene products are a fact of life for women. Most often, we use what our mothers used, rarely surveying the options, or the risks involved. But, as we discovered, there are risks. Conventional tampons and sanitary pads are bleached white using chlorine dioxide, which can be toxic. A woman will use as many as 17,000 tampons in her lifetime. Many are made ou .....

The Naturally Savvy Seal of Approval

When people perceive a food as nutritious, they tend to let their guard down, especially when it comes to portion control. This is called the “health halo” and marketing and advertising companies take full advantage of it.Products might be labeled ‘trans fat free’ even though they contain partially hydrogenated fats, ‘made with real fruit’ when the product also contains a rainbow of artificial colors, flavors and high-fructose corn syrup, and ‘no salt added’, even if the ingredient .....

A Tampon Experiment: A Picture Tells the Tale

I recently started a petition, along with my Naturally Savvy team, telling Procter & Gamble to disclose what's in their feminine hygiene products. As consumers, we’re in the dark about what’s in our sanitary pads and tampons, largely because they’re considered a medical device, and as a result, the ingredients d .....

What's So Bad About GMOs? Top Ten Reasons to Avoid Them

If you don't know whether or not you're eating genetically modified organisms, you're not alone—at least in the U.S. Despite the many petitions and appeals for state or federal regulations on labeling foods that contain GMOs, none have passed. And that means companies still don't have to disclose whether or not a product includes genetically modified organisms. What's the big deal, you ask?More than 60 countries require GMO labeling ( .....

Culture and Age Influence Taste Preferences in Children

The conventional wisdom on how children develop taste preferences is that socio-demographic factors, such as the education level and income of parents, have an effect. A recently published study turns that wisdom on its head. Published in Food Quality and Preference journal, the European study looked at the flavor preferences of more than 1,700 children ages six and nine years old from eight countries (Belgium, Cyprus, .....
